The French Overture, BWV (or Partita in B minor as it is often called), exists in an earlier version in the key of C minor, written in the hand of Bach’s second wife, Anna Magdalena. The transposition down a semitone was no doubt to provide more contrast with the Italian Concerto in F major.

Recorded early in Angela Hewitt's Bach cycle, the popular French Suites (along with the "Little Preludes" and other two more dynamic virtuoso pieces) take a step back from the more serious and complex fugal compositions of Bach and settle into the restrained elegance of the courtly and rustic dances of the era/5(26).

Strong but delicate, deliberate but subtle, driven but supple, Masaaki Suzuki's recording of Bach's Italian Concerto and French Overture for harpsichord are quite convincing in their own distinctive way. In Suzuki's hands, the opening crash of the Italian Concerto is as instantly arresting as the powerful opening prelude and fugue from the French Overture is immediately appealing.

Back to Bach, the composer of Gould’s two new releases of The same year was noted for other projects: Gould recorded a Schoenberg set and the first episode of a television series Music in Our Time, both for CBC, and he joined the French director Bruno Monsaingeon to create the fourpart Chemins de la musique for ORTF.

Angela Hewitt, who is recording all of Bach's keyboard works on piano, has proven to be one of the most inspired interpreters of his music. This set features the French Suites, some of Bach's most popular works for keyboard, as well as a number of "extra" pieces; more than just filler, they provide two chock-full CDs of excellent music.
