Chabrier’s opéra bouffe L'Etoile, composed in , is in fact – and as Stravinsky pointed out – something of a masterpiece. Yes, the plot is silly, but plots seem to have been supposed to be silly in the opéra bouffe tradition (and it is, indeed, rather fun), and Chabrier’s ever-inventive music is buoyant and entertaining, in addition to featuring a number of truly memorable themes /5(12).

Having recently seen a deplorable production of L'Etoile at Covent Garden I went to this recording to be reminded what Chabrier's enchanting work ought to sound like. John Eliot Gardiner truly has the measure of the score. It is a soufflé, and he and his superb French cast make it a joy, fizzing with energy and fun from start to finish/5(13).

Emmanuel Chabrier () as an opera composer has been unjustly neglected. Labelled as a Gallic 'Wagnerian', his best music is quintessentially French, light (but expertly so) and refined. Some of his compositions do tend towards 'Wagner', like Gwendoline /5(17).
